This week we are joined by Amanda Brodhagen who has grown up in rural Ontario and has an extensive amount of knowledge regarding the ag sector including the beef industry.  Amanda grew up on a beef farm near Bruner, Ontario and is currently an Agriculture & Agri-Food Associate at the Pathway Group.  Amanda wears many different hats including being a Counsellor for the Township of Perth East as well as working on her multi-generational family farm in Perth County.  Amanda joins us to discuss her experiences, what the future looks like and what some of the challenges are that producers will face.

Migrant Workers: A Part of Our Community

On this episode of The Back 40 we are joined by Jennifer Pfenning who is a co-owner and operator of Pfenning’s Organic Vegetables, a 700 acre farm just outside of New Hamburg, Ontario.  Their family has been farming in the area since 1981 and has farming roots that date back over 400 years!  As Pfenning’s grew they shifted from solely grain farming to vegetables which requires a lot more labour.  They have developed strong relationships with their workers, who have come solely from Jamaica and truly believe that they are integral to the success of their operation.  Jenn joins us to discuss the challenges that their farm has faced over the last year and the challenges that many foreign workers face coming to Ontario.     ...

The Family Dairy Farm

This week, Dave and Doug Johnston join us to discuss their family operation Maplevue Farms and the family dynamics of working together.  They are farmers working on their fifth generation dairy farm just outside of Listowel, Ontario.  Over those years the farm has gone through many changes including most recently the addition of a robotic milker.  Doug and Dave have worked hard to keep their farm running and are looking to pass the torch soon the next generation.  Working with family is never easy, but on their family farm they make it work with a bit of laughter and everyone pitching in. ...
