This week Kevin Varley, Broker at Josslin Insurance, joins us to talk about the uncertainty surrounding the future of tradeshows.  Kevin has been apart of the organizing committees for a couple of different tradeshows including the International Plowing Match in 2017 and the Ontario Pork Congress over the last few years.  Tradeshows have always been a staple within the agriculture community as a great way to get out, see the latest technology, and speak with representatives from many companies all in one spot.  The last year has taken quite a toll on many shows, but many are looking towards the next year with some optimism.     ...

Who Would Fill Your Boots?

On this episode of The Back 40 we are joined by Stephanie Berkeley, Manager of the Farm Safety Foundation based in the UK.  Stephanie grew up in Donegal, Ireland where most people within the community either farm or fish.  The Farm Safety Foundation was established to be a registered charity that aims to answer the question “who would fill your boots”?  The goal is to get farmers thinking about themselves as the greatest asset to their farm.  Who would step in should they experience an accident?  The Farm Safety Foundation uses real world examples, testimonials and virtual reality to show current and future farmers that these accidents can happen to anyone at anytime.   Stephanie joins us to discuss the impact their farm safety foundation is having on the farmers and students across the UK and their overall understanding of farm safety.  ...

On this episode of The Back 40 we are joined by Jennifer Pfenning who is a co-owner and operator of Pfenning’s Organic Vegetables, a 700 acre farm just outside of New Hamburg, Ontario.  Their family has been farming in the area since 1981 and has farming roots that date back over 400 years!  As Pfenning’s grew they shifted from solely grain farming to vegetables which requires a lot more labour.  They have developed strong relationships with their workers, who have come solely from Jamaica and truly believe that they are integral to the success of their operation.  Jenn joins us to discuss the challenges that their farm has faced over the last year and the challenges that many foreign workers face coming to Ontario.     ...

Farmland Conservation for Future Generations

Today on The Back 40 we are joined by Cathy Lennon, General Manager at the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA).  Cathy is from Perth County and has held many positions within the agricultural industry including with Ontario Sheep Farmers, Ontario Processing Vegetable Growers, Agricorp and Farm Credit Canada.  The OFA is the largest general farm organization in Ontario that represents and champions the interest of Ontario farmers.  This includes government relations, farm policy, research, community representation, media relations and member support.  Cathy joins us to discuss the issue of farmland preservation and what is being done to help protect farmland across Ontario.  Why is it important? How will it impact future generations?
